African Insulator

Reprinted from "INSULATORS - Crown Jewels of the Wire", January 1970, page 19

by Ira G. Groff

I have received a rather interesting insulator from Africa, and thought the readers of "Crown Jewels" would enjoy hearing about it. The insulator was sent from Accra, Ghana, and is made of fine white porcelain, completely glazed except for the top. The sketch I have enclosed is life sized, that is 4" x 2 3/8", and the threaded hole is only 1/2" in diameter. The embossed design is that of an upright hand, with an owl sitting on a triangle surrounding the palm. There is a letter "H" directly beneath it. I am sure it is one of a kind in this country.

I believe I am the only active collector in Pittsburgh, and normally confine my collecting to glass insulators. I am planning a trip to Europe in the spring, and hope to have some interesting insulators to report on.
